DADDY COOL at the Shaftesbury Theatre stars Michelle Collins, Harvey from So Solid Crew and Javine and is directed by Andy Goldberg (Bomb/itty of Errors, Nerds), with set/costume design by Jon Morrell (His Dark Materials), lighting by Rob Halliday (My Fair Lady, UK tour), musical supervision by Mike Dixon (We Will Rock You, Pop Idol), musical staging by Lizzi Gee (Snoopy, Bat Boy), orchestrations by Steve Sidwell (Our House, We Will Rock You) and creative associate Gurinder Chadha (Bend it Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice).
Set in multicultural London, to the music of Boney M (and other Frank Farian artists including Milli Vanilli and No Mercy), this new and exciting musical includes classics such as Rivers Of Babylon, Brown Girl In The Ring, Ma Baker, Girl You Know It’s True, Where Do You Go, One Way Ticket and Mary’s Boychild. DADDY COOL tells the story of ‘Sunny’, a young man who lives for his music. Caught up in local rivalry between East and West London crews, he meets and falls in love with ‘Rose’, daughter of the East End’s notorious club owner ‘Ma Baker’. Echoing Romeo and Juliet, the lovers’ relationship fuels the hostility between the two gangs, leaving their families face to face with past secrets and forcing them to confront their future.
DADDY COOL is directed by American-born Andy Goldberg (Bomb-itty of Errors, Nerds), with the book by Stephen Plaice with Amani Naphtali. Stephen’s television credits include The Bill, Ballykissangel, Dream Team and Murder Squad and he has recently been working on Moonshadow, a musical with Yusuf Islam, using the songs of Cat Stevens. Amani Naphtali’s previous plays include the ground-breaking Ragamuffin, as well as Valley of the Blind and Song of Songs. Gurinder Chadha (Bhaji on the Beach, Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice) is Creative Associate. Choreography is by Sean Cheesman (double MTV award-winner and choreographer for Prince, Whitney Houston, Michael & Janet Jackson and Britney Spears). Set and Costume design is by Jon Morrell (His Dark Materials, The Winter’s Tale - both NT, Carnival of the Animals at New York City Ballet), with Lighting design by Rob Halliday (My Fair Lady, UK tour) and Sound by Richard Brooker (Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins,Billy Elliot).
With music from Boney M and Frank Farian Productions, Musical Supervision is by Mike Dixon (Aspects of Love, Grease, We Will Rock You) with orchestrations by Steve Sidwell (We Will Rock You, motion picture Moulin Rouge and Robbie William’s Swing While You’re Winning) and musical staging by Lizzi Gee (Snoopy, Bat Boy).
